Shui Xian in a special cup / Shui Hsien in einer besonderen Schale

Heute zeige ich Euch Bilder von einem ziemlich durchschnittlichen Tee, aber den habe ich aus meiner liebsten Schale getrunken. Weil die Schale auf meinen Bildern oft auftaucht, sollte ich vielleicht mal etwas zu ihr schreiben.

Today I will show you pictures of a tea that's mediocre, but I have been enjoying it in my favourite cup. Since the cup appears quite often on this blog, I thought to tell you a bit about it.

Bevor wir uns um die heutige Hauptdarstellerin kümmern, erstmal kurz zum Tee: ein Shui Xian ohne nähere Angaben auf der Mustertüte, die ich von unseren Tea Tastern ergattern konnte. Es ist so ungefähr der generischste Wuyi-Tee, den ich kenne. Im Aroma dunkle Schokolade und geröstete Haselnüsse, geschmacklich gefällig - aber ohne jegliches besonderes Merkmal. Wenn ich in einem Restaurant solchen Tee bekäme, wäre ich angenehm überrascht. Doch würde meine Kaufbereitschaft im Laden verebben, wenn mehr als 9€ pro 100g verlangt würden. Weil der Hersteller einen überzogenen Preis verlangt hat, wird dieser Tee auch nicht in unserem Sortiment landen.

Before we take care of today's main attraction, let's have a look at the tea: a shui xian without any further information on the sample bag I received from our tea tasters. This is propably the most generic Wuyi oolong to be found. A fragrance of dark chocolate with notes of roasted hazelnuts. Taste is okay - but without anything to make it special. If I would be served such a tea in a restaurant it would be a pleasant surprise. But in a shop my willingness to buy it would end at a price of 9€ per 100g. The producer was asking a far to high price for this one, so you will not find it in our range.

Aber jetzt zur Schale:
But now the cup: 

Im Vergleich zum 100ml Gaiwan sieht die Schale ganz schön wuchtig aus.
When compared to a 100ml gaiwan, the cup looks rather massive.

Die Schale wurde von einer Freundin getöpfert, der ich meine liebste Tassenform beschrieben habe (wobei ich an etwas kleineres gedacht hatte). Die Asymetrie ist wohl der entscheidende grund für meine Liebe zu dieser Schale. Zusammen mit dem hellen, natürlich gesprenkelten Ton und einer sehr leichten Glasierung vermittelt mir die Schale eine Stimmung, wie ich sie bei der japanischen Teezeremonie sehr schätze (wabicha).

This cup was made by a friend, to whom I had described my favourite shape of tea cups (but I didn't specify the usual size of those cups). This cup came from the kiln in such an endearing asymetric way, I couldn't help myself - love at first sight! This slightly lopsided silhouette acts together with the dotted clay and light glaze to convey the mood of a tranquil Japanese tea ceremony (wabicha).

Der Fuß der Schale ist ziemlich schwer. Dies bringt zwei Vorteile: (1) ein stabiler Stand und (2) hält das schwere Material (sofern genügend vorgewärmt) die Hitze so lange, dass der letzte Schluck in der Tasse heiß bleibt.

The cup's foot is quite heavy. This is a double benefit: (1) a solid stand  and (2) when thoroughly preheated, the heavy foot retains warmth for quite long, so it keeps the last bit of tea hot.

Wenn ich eine Gaiwan-Füllung in die Schale umgieße, bleibt viel Volumen leer. Kein Problem! Ich schnüffel so an dem Tee, dass mein Gesicht wie ein Deckel die Schale verschließt und sich dann zwischen Tee und Nase eine dichte Aromawolke bildet, die ich dann genüsslich inhalieren kann.

When I empty my gaiwan into this cup, a lot of cup space remains empty. That's no problem! I try to catch all the teas scent and in doing so my face becomes a lid for the cup. Thus the space between the tea and my face takes up a cloud of concentrated fragrance which I can inhale and enjoy.
