Puer storage (Lagerung)

Today I received two shipments of puer.
Heute habe ich gleich zwei Puer-Lieferungen bekommen.

Nach dem Auspacken wurde es aber ernst: wie soll ich meine vergrößerte Sammlung lagern?

After unpacking all the goodies (and having some Gollum moments with my preciousss, my precioussss), I finally had to solve the question: how to store my growing collection?

Einfach ins Regal legen wäre schön ... weil aber Fremdgerüche bei meinem Teerefugium ein Problem sein können, musste eine andere Lösung her.
Just to display everything on shelves would look nice ... but sometimes alien odours (like the laundry being dried just a few feet away) invade my tea refuge, so another solution had to be found.

Einige lagern ihren Puer in großen Tongefäßen, aber wie sorgt man dann dafür, dass es nicht den totalen Luftstau darin gibt?
Some people store their puer in big clay jars, but how to ensure there is still some ventilation?

Lösung: Blumentopf!
Solution: flower pot!

 

Ein Untersetzer, der die Zuluft von unten ermöglicht.

A clay trivet enables air to reach the pot from below.

Topf auf dem Untersetzer, über dem Loch im Boden des Topfes ein Teller mit etwas Abstand. So kann die Luft an den Wänden entlang aufsteigen.

Pot placed on trivet, above the bottom hole I've placed a dish with some room below and to the sides. Thus air can enter from below and rise along the walls.

Darein ein Beutel mit meiner Sammlung von Proben und 100g Tütchen.

In goes a goodie bag of samples and 100g bags. 

Darauf kommen die Bing: Mangfei 2008, Jingmai 2010 und ganz oben ein Jingmai 2012 Minibing. Die Sammlung hat noch Platz zum Wachsen!

On top of the samples I placed my bing collection: Mangfei 2008, Jingmai 2010 and a brand new Jingmai 2012 xiaobing. Still got room for my collection to grow!

 

Ein gefaltetes Tuch sorgt für einen Luftspalt unterm Deckel. Der Deckel ist ein Ton-Untersetzer, wie man sie für solche Blumentöpfe bekommt.

A folded cloth ensures there's an air gap between pot and lid. The lid is one of those clay 'saucers' (what's the correct word?) usually placed below the pot.

In dem Schatztopf sind nur Sheng. Ich habe Befürchtungen, dass der Kompost-Geruch vom Shu die zarteren Sheng-Düfte überlagern könnte.

Within this treasure trove are only sheng. I fear a shu's composty odour might affect the shengs' more subtle fragrances.

Probleme, die ungelöst sind: Luftfeuchtigkeit, Temperatur, Geruchsfilter.

Problems left unsolved: humidity, temperature, odour filter.

Luftfeuchtigkeit / humidity:

Den Tontopf habe ich vorher gut gewässert. Jetzt überlege ich, ob ich unter den Untersetzer eine Schale mit Wasser stelle, damit die Zuluft gut befeuchtet ist.

The clay pot had a thorough soak in clear water. Now I think about placing a bowl of water below the trivet. Thus the incoming air would be more humid.

Temperatur / temperature:

Um tropische Temperaturen zu gewährleisten, hatte ich überelgt, eine 25W Glühbirne im Topf anzubringen, die konstant Wärme abgibt. Aber hey, ein bißchen ökologisches Gewissen sollte man sich bewahren!

To ensure tropical temperatures, I considered placing a 25W lightbulb inside  the pot, which issues far more thermal energy than light. But hey - a bit of ecological thinking made me stop that waste of energy.

Gruchsfilter / odour filter

Wegen der gewollten Luftbewegungsmöglichkeit im Topf gibt es noch die Möglichkeit, dass Waschpulvergeruch eindringt. Ich habe bei TeeTalk.de eine Planung gelesen, wo die Zuluft durch Wasser gefiltert mit einem passenden Schlauch in den Lagertopf gepumpt wird. Das scheint mir aber zu störungsanfällig - und viel zu aufwändig.

Due to the desired airflow possibility, there is still a way for washing powder smells to enter the pot. There is a post on TeeTalk.de, which details a plan of pumping waterfiltered air into the puer storage. That seems to be prone to malfunctions - and a bit excessive.

Ich liebe Tee - aber das ist keine Investition in meine Altersvorsorge, die zur Wertsteigerung optimal reifen muss. Also sehe ich das relativ entspannt ... passt auch besser zum Teetrinken!

Yes, I love tea - but this is not my pension fund which has to mature pefectly for optimum return on investment. So I'm taking more of a relaxed approach - which suits tea drinking much better than obsessive precautions.

Natürlich schließe ich nicht ohne Fragen:

Hat schon jemand Erfahrungen mit der gemeinsamen Lagerung unterschiedlichster Sheng auf engem Raum? Ist das egal, ob Shu und Sheng zusammen logieren?

Of course, I would not end a post without open questions:

Has anyone gathered experience with storing diverse sheng together in a confined place? Would it be ok to include my shu?

Update December 12th 2012

I had to move my tea to the living room. Our attic, where I have set up my tea refuge, is freezing cold. So I have moved my sheng bings down to the living room. As the radiators do not only generate cozy warmth but also dehydrate the air, I needed to change the setup of my storage jar:

Placed on a folded cloth (to protect our flooring). Three cups of water should increase humidity.

Above the cups there I have placed a trivet upside down, to reduce the number of tea particles to drop into the water cups. (tea leaves + water + time = mould).

This is the platform on which I can place my bings.

I've gone over to storing my bings face down - else too many loose leaves drop out of the wrappers.

I've closed the jar completely, without any gaps for air circulation. But I check about 3-4 times a week for any signs of mould (and would replenish water when the need arises). When I open the jar, the fragrance is pure bliss.

As the clay absorbs water I am not worried about having too much humidity inside the jar. Still I check regularly to make sure I am not harming my (meagre) stash.
